Man dies as listeria outbreak recalls frozen food

Woolworths South Africa has recalled it's frozen savoury rice mix product due to Listeria concerns. The retailer said the precautionary recall came after a worldwide recall issued by the Hungarian Food Safety Agency.

When you're cooking up a storm and you still have to put the pot of rice on the stove, it can be a bit of an effort.

"Frozen corn and possibly other frozen vegetables are the likely source of an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes that has been affecting Austria, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom since 2015", says an EFSA statement.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has issued a recall for a range of frozen vegetables that were sourced from Greenyard Frozen Belgium NV, which may contain the pathogen.

Listeria is a bacterium that is naturally found in the environment.

The people most at risk from listeriosis include those suffering from cancer, pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborn babies, and elderly people.

The factory has been implicated as the potential source of a listeria outbreak in Europe.

Woolworths on Monday removed a product believed to be contaminated with listeria from its shelves.
