Egypt explosion: Twelve hurt in blast near Cairo airport

Pictures shared on social media appear to show a fireball rising into the air in the Heliopolis district.

A large explosion near an airport in Cairo, Egypt, Thursday evening was heard throughout the capital, according to witnesses and various reports.

The blast is believed to have been the result of two fuel storage tanks, owned by a petrochemical company, catching fire and exploding outside the airport perimeter.

He denied early news that claimed the explosion occurred at the Cairo International, its pier, or the gas station.

Egyptian state television is reporting that a fire raging as a result of the explosion had been brought under control.

The minister of civil aviation, Younis al-Masri, said air traffic at the airport was unaffected by the explosion, which could be heard across the area.

The ministry's spokesperson affirmed that the flights at the airport were not at all affected by the explosion.

There is no confirmation so far of any casualties. Authorities are investigating the incident.
