Paul Manafort says he's being treated like a "VIP" in jail

Paul Manafort says he's being treated like a

President Donald Trump's jailed former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, has said in monitored phone calls that he is being treated like a "VIP" while behind bars, federal prosecutors said Wednesday as they argued against postponing his financial crimes trial.

In a filing to a Virginia federal judge overseeing one of two trials scheduled for Manafort, prosecutors said Manafort's assertions in court papers about conditions in jail, including limited access to evidence and his attorneys, were untrue.

Furthermore, prosecutors said Mr. Manafort has his own bathroom and shower, a self-contained living unit - instead of a cell - that is larger than other inmates' space and he is not required to wear a prison uniform.

The Northern Neck Regional Jail is about 100 miles from Washington, and Manafort lawyers wrote in a filing last week that the two-hour trip and restrictions on electronic or telephone communications "has made meetings.to prepare his defense far more infrequent and enormously time-consuming".

A federal judge in Alexandria, Virginia, has ordered Paul Manafort moved to that city's jail to prepare for his upcoming trial on bank and tax fraud charges.

Manafort has also asked for the Virginia trial to be moved to Roanoke, saying northern Virginians were too overwhelmed with news stories about the case and too hostile toward the Trump administration to give him a fair trial.

Manafort has been jailed since last month after a judge revoked his house arrest. He also has a personal laptop, they say, with an extension cord so he can use it in his unit and not just the workroom.

The prosecutors' filing says Manafort has everything he needs to prepare for the trial, including his own phone and computer.

The NATO summit is also being attended by leaders of so-called NATO partner states that are not members of the alliance. Mr Stoltenberg also stressed how "even during the Cold War, NATO allies were trading with Russia".

But visitor logs and recordings of phone calls show that isn't the case, prosecutors said in a court filing Wednesday opposing Manafort's request for a delay. "When the team takes the laptop from the jail, it reconnects to the internet and Manafort's emails are transmitted".

The context for Manafort's comment wasn't clear but he is facing charges related to his work on behalf of clients overseas, including the onetime government of Ukraine and a powerful Russian oligarch. To make their case, they cited recorded jail calls and prison logs suggesting Manafort is getting treated better than most detainees, not worse. He instructed the U.S. Marshals Service to move Manafort to Alexandria, as he initially planned.

Manafort, in his suppression request, argued that the warrant wasn't specific enough in describing the evidence it sought to seize, and that its scope was broader than the probable cause on which it was based.
