Israel Intercepts Incoming Drone from Syria

Syrian military air defenses thwarted missiles that Israeli aircraft fired at army positions in Quneitra province in the early hours of Thursday, state media said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traveled to Moscow Wednesday to communicate Israel's security concerns in Syria and Lebanon to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On June 24, Israel's military said it launched a Patriot missile at an incoming drone from Syria, which turned away unscathed.

However, Israel's de-facto border with Syria in the Golan Heights was one of Israel's quietest borders until the civil war erupted.

Until the military was able to determine what steps to take against the drone, the air force called in four fighter jets and two attack helicopters, which would have been able to provide a more immediate response, Conricus said.

Israel fired a Patriot missile at an unmanned drone that entered its airspace from Syria on Wednesday, the military said, warning it would not tolerate such infiltrations, which have occurred several times over the past year.

The air force has struck many targets it describes as Iranian deployments or arms transfers to Iran supported Hezbollah.

Israel threatened a "harsh response" on Monday to any attempt by Syrian forces advancing against southern rebel areas to deploy in a Golan Heights frontier zone that was demilitarized under a 44-year-old United Nations monitored truce between the neighboring foes.

Netanyahu told Russian Federation on Wednesday that he would not try and topple the Syrian President.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in an interview with Italian newspaper Il Giornale published Wednesday that Moscow hopes that Israel and Iran will both display caution and avoid a showdown.

Netanyahu's government has made clear it would not now cede the plateau and has been lobbying for US recognition of Israel's claim of sovereignty there. The IDF tweeted that the UAV was successfully intercepted. And in November 2017, the military shot down another Syrian military drone that approached Israeli airspace.
