Trump announces Brett Kavanaugh as Supreme Court nominee

"I will oppose Judge Kavanaugh's nomination with everything I have, and I hope a bipartisan majority will do the same", Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer of NY said in a statement.

"Hardiman was fully vetted last time, and flawless record, too", a source outside but close to the White House told NPR.

However, Maryanne Trump Barry, Trump's sister who also serves as a federal judge, has supported Hardiman-whom she served with on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia. "And I believe this person will do a great job", Trump said as he prepared to return to Washington from a weekend at his New Jersey golf club. John McCain. The defection of one Republican would kill the nomination unless at least one Democrat votes yes.

Trump's approach to naming a new Supreme Court justice has unnerved some Democrats.

"I will conduct a careful, thorough vetting of the President's nominee to the Supreme Court, as I have done with the five previous Supreme Court Justices whom I have considered".

Judge Kavanaugh by comparison, recently voiced disagreement with a court decision allowing an undocumented teenage immigrant to have an abortion.

Trump a year ago appointed Gorsuch, who has already become one of the most conservative justices, after Senate Republicans in 2016 refused to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama's nominee Merrick Garland to fill a vacancy left by the death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia.

"I look forward to Judge Kavanaugh's public hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee and to questioning him in a meeting in my office", Collins said.

"Kavanaugh has proven himself to be a political operative when it comes to undermining the Affordable Care Act through frivolous cases and opinions", she said.

But she is also seen as potentially hard to confirm, given the narrowness of the Senate GOP majority, the previous controversy in her confirmation process when she was nominated for the federal bench a year ago, her lack of a deep judicial record of opinions and her openness to overturning Roe v. Wade.

Hardiman holds a consistently conservative voting record. As a young attorney in prosecutor Kenneth Starr's office, he was the lead author of the salacious Starr Report calling for president Bill Clinton's impeachment, and represented George W. Bush in the Florida vote recount that awarded the 2000 election to Bush.

On this NPR Politics Podcast, political reporter Asma Khalid, national political correspondent Mara Liasson and congressional reporter Kelsey Snell explore Kavanaugh's background and why Trump nominated him to serve on the high court.

Trump teases pick for Supreme Court
President Obama introduces federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland as his nominee for the Supreme Court on March 16, 2016. Susan Collins of ME affirmed to reporters Wednesday she will not affirm a nominee with "demonstrated hostility" to Roe v.

In his dozen years on the court, Kavanaugh has been involved in some 286 opinions.

That kind of thinking could prove helpful to Trump, who has been dogged by accusations of sexual harassment, as well as possible obstruction of justice in the Russian Federation probe now being led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Kavanaugh, 53, is likely to sit on the bench for decades and make crucial decisions on issues of abortion, gay rights, gun rights, healthcare and immigration. A judge must interpret statutes as written.

Outside adviser Leonard Leo, now on leave from the Federalist Society, said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that this kind of jockeying is standard, noting that "every potential nominee before announcement gets concerns expressed about them by people who might ultimately support them". Ten Democrats from states that Trump won are up for re-election this fall and will be under tremendous pressure to back the president's nominee. "This is a nominee who is going to be incredibly popular". "I remember hearing speculation that he was thought of as more mainstream than other people on the list - he's got the traditional credentials of people on the Supreme Court".

McConnell has promised a vote on the nomination before the November midterms, ensuring the outcome will be an issue before voters.

Pickford believes England can establish their own history in 2018
Thibaut Courtois insists he did not intend his recent remarks about Jordan Pickford to sound disparaging. He got a bit of criticism last week, undeservedly, so I am so happy for him to achieve that.
