Many North Carolina beaches were closed due to heavy surf and unsafe currents caused by the storm, the governor's office said.

Aside from Chris, the only other prospect for tropical storm activity in the Atlantic is from the weather disturbance, which was, at one point, Hurricane Beryl.

Environment Canada's latest advisory says that "by late Tuesday or early Wednesday this storm could attain hurricane status".

Elsewhere, the remnants of storm Beryl were producing strong gusty winds and areas of heavy rain over the north-central Caribbean Sea, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Starbucks to phase out single-use plastic straws for sippy cups, alternatives
The new versions will also be available with other drinks upon request for those who prefer or need to use straws. On July 1, Seattle became the first US city to ban plastic straws, spoons, forks and knives.

The hurricane center said there was a possibility that Beryl's remnants could regenerate into a tropical cyclone in a few days while moving across the Bahamas.

Tropical storm watches were in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia and Dominica.

"Currently, we are forecasting a moderate risk for rip currents for Horry and Georgetown counties", Pfaff said. Intermittent rainstorms already were hitting Dominica early Sunday - 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 centimeters) of rain could fall as the storm moves through or near the island on Sunday night.

A tropical storm warning had been issued for Dominica, which was battered by Category 5 Hurricane Maria in September of past year. "Interests elsewhere in the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic should monitor the progress of Beryl". La Desirade Island near Guadeloupe recently reported a sustained wind of 35 miles per hour (57 km/h) and a wind gust of 46 miles per hour (78 km/h).

Tropical Storm Chris has formed in the Atlantic, the third named storm of the 2018 hurricane season.

Showers and thunderstorms will be fairly likely again today as moisture starts moving westward. Chris is expected to meander for the next day or so, then eventually will be pulled toward the northeast with strengthening forecast.

Haligonians could feel the impacts of a tropical storm later this week that has developed off the East Coast of the United States.
