USA service member killed in 'insider attack' in Afghanistan

A Saturday statement by the Resolute Support Mission said that two other US service members were wounded but in stable condition.

One U.S. service member was killed and two were wounded Saturday during an apparent insider attack in southern Afghanistan, a NATO-led mission release said.

The statement did not provide further details, saying that the name of the US service member killed in action would be withheld until notification of next of kin. USA military officials at the top US military headquarters in Kabul could not immediately be reached for additional comment. The death is the third American military fatality in Afghanistan this year.

The service branch of the troops and the province in which the suspected attack occurred have not been made public.

The incident comes just over a year after three US soldiers were killed and one other was injured when an Afghan National Army soldier fired on a unit in Nangarhar Province. The Afghan province that has seen the highest number of attacks is Helmand to the south, a Taliban stronghold and the heart of Afghanistan's opium-growing industry.

The incident happened at an Afghan army base in Uruzgan Province in southern Afghanistan, according to a USA official.

The apparent insider attack came just over a year after three USA soldiers were killed in an attack by an Afghan soldier.

Insider attacks on Afghan forces - and deaths resulting from those attacks - have increased by more than 50 percent compared to the same time frame previous year.
