USA ambassador tries to lower expectation for Trump-Putin meeting

President Donald Trump is prepared to discuss Russian election meddling and other "malign" activities when he meets one-on-one with President Vladimir Putin later this month, the United States ambassador to Russia said.

Trump, who is set to leave for Europe on Tuesday, will hold meetings with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies in Brussels, visit Britain, and then meet Putin in Helsinki for a one-on-one meeting on July 16.

Trump and Putin will likely also discuss two arms control pacts - the INF Treaty and the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), Huntsman said, declining to address whether they might strike a deal on either pact, which are planks of U.S.

Senior administration officials said during a call with reporters Thursday Trump is going into the meeting with his "eyes wide open" to make sure Russian Federation is held accountable for hybrid warfare and aggression in Ukraine and Syria. But it will also take place under the cloud of special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing probe into potential links between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin during the 2016 vote.

As the upcoming Donald Trump-Vladimir Putin summit draws near, Fox News host Melissa Francis is reminding people it's essential for the president to challenge Russian Federation for their interference in American politics.

"Everyone in our alliance has the same goal, and that is a strong deterrent; an alliance that is unified that can face any threats that any one of our 29 members might face", she said, listing "Russia and the malign activities of Russian Federation, the efforts of Russian Federation to divide our Democratic nations" and INF treaty violations as among those threats.

One official who asked to speak on the condition of anonymity said "we're entering with our eyes wide open" but "the ball really is in Russia's court" when it comes to changing their behavior.

A heady sequence of high-profile events, summits and photo-ops at home and overseas will position Trump as a dominant figure in global politics whose wrecking ball leadership style could be felt years after he has left office.

Trump has expressed scorn for the alliance and is expected to upbraid European NATO members for not spending enough on their own defense.

Russian output rose to 11.06 million bpd in June from 10.97 million bpd in May, the Energy Ministry said on Monday. President Donald Trump accused the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries of driving up fuel prices.

"The president [Trump] hopes the meeting will help reduce tensions and meet the constructive engagement that approves peace and security of our world", Huntsman said.
