Sweden vs. Switzerland - Football Match Report

Sweden secured their spot in the quarter-finals at the 2018 World Cup with a 1-0 win over Switzerland in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday.

The Europeans have in fact fired first-half blanks on three occasions now, against Brazil, Serbia and Sweden respectively; their only strike within the first 45 minutes came against minnows Costa Rica after the nation had already guaranteed their qualification to the knock-out rounds.

After beating Switzerland, Sweden will play against either England or Colombia in the semifinals.

The team, which has enough salary-cap space to sign him and another star player, is still said to be in pursuit of Kawhi Leonard . Within the hour of signing James, the team signed Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to a second one-year deal, per ESPN's Chris Haynes .

Switzerland has not scored a goal in the knockout stage of a World Cup since their 7-5 loss to Austria in the quarter-finals of the 1954 World Cup which they hosted with their last ever knockout goal at a major tournament since 1954 being scored by Xherdan Shaqiri against Poland in Euro 2016.

However, it was Lustig who picked up the first booking of the match, and it was to prove a costly one as it rules him out of Sweden's quarter-final clash. He had little to work with when he did find space and get his head up, but was deserving of his luck when he cut in on his right foot in the 66th minute and took a shot that was deflected past Yann Sommer and into the net.

Forsberg also produced a well-timed clearance in his own penalty area to preserve the advantage against a Switzerland side who finished with 10 men, defender Michael Lang seeing red after clipping the heels of Martin Olsson just outside the penalty area when the substitute was clean through on goal.

Switzerland was fortunate to still be alive at that point. You can watch a Live Stream of the match via beIN SPORTS CONNECT.

Ibrahimovic, 36 and now playing out his illustrious career in the United States, would surely have put away some of the first-half chances created by his countrymen against a fragile Switzerland defence which was missing the suspended Fabian Schaer and Stephan Lichtsteiner.

In team news, Sebastian Larsson will be unavailable through suspension. Switzerland didn't have a chance to get to the other end after the resulting free kick was saved. Then, in the second half, Xhaka lined up a shot from outside the area and very almost whiffed.

Olsson was pushed in the back by Lang with only Sommer to beat in injury-time, with Skomina initially awarding a penalty but changing his decision to a free-kick after he consulted the replay.
