‘Impeach 45’ clothing sparks Walmart boycott campaign

Fournier's message soon went viral, leading to angry consumers threatening to boycott the company.

As of early Tuesday morning, the "Impeach 45" clothing was still available on Walmart's website.

The "Impeach 45" apparel line at Walmart stores has led to calls for shoppers to boycott the retail giant from supporters of President Donald Trump, USA Today and other sources report.

The T-shirts weren't being sold by Wal-Mart itself, but by third-party sellers including Old Glory and Teespring Inc.

People on social media lashed out to show their discontent with Walmart selling the political merchandise. Walmart didn't immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.

Trump supporters took to Twitter with the hashtag #BoycottWalmart.

"These items were sold by third party sellers on our open marketplace, and were not offered directly by Walmart".

Old Glory, which was founded in 1969 and makes its T-shirts in Westbrook, Conn., received "a couple thousand" orders of the impeachment apparel on Tuesday alone, accounting for about half of the day's sales, Morelli said.

It appears the retailer removed the items from its website.

This isn't the first time Walmart has encountered backlash for selling political items.

Walmart came under fire for another incident last November when customers noticed a shirts that read, "Rope".

On June 27, Walmart announced that it was introducing a 3D virtual shopping tour on its website, as the retailer pours billions of dollars into beefing up its e-commerce business.
