OnePlus 7, not OnePlus 6T, will have this future-proof feature

5G phones may still be a distant reality, but OnePlus wants to be ahead in the race.

At Mobile World Congress Shanghai, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau talked about future plans for the company.

But overall 5G isn't likely to be one of the big selling points of the OnePlus 7, or even the OnePlus 7T if that doesn't pan out. The problem is that most phones don't support 5G yet, and we can't really connect to those speeds until we get them.

According to a GSM Arena report, Lau said its devices would be sold through carrier stores in the US.

Given that 5G is realistically some time away from a global roll-out, OnePlus offering support on its 2019 devices might be innovation too early. Lau isn't saying if the company has started talking with United States carriers for a potential partnership, but he's confident about a consistent, bloatware-free experience will continue to be available on its phones even if carriers try pre-install bloatware. Thus, after a OnePlus 6T that should be introduced in the second half of 2018, we expect the company's first high-end handsets of 2019 to be called OnePlus 7. Americans are unusual in that most smartphone sales come through the networks compared to other sales channels, and so far OnePlus has been ignored by them all across the Atlantic.

The new OnePlus phone, says Pete Lau, should be among the world's first to feature 5G connectivity. This year's iPhone X successors aren't supposed to pack 5G support, because that's not how Apple does things.
