Luka Doncic at forefront for Atlanta Hawks at 3rd overall

As one of the likely top selections in the draft, Doncic's talent is undeniable, with NBA TV offering a profile of the 19-year-old native of Slovenia that indicated who his favorite player is: Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James.

Dallas moved up two spots in the National Basketball Association draft Thursday night to get Slovenian guard Luka Doncic, who was selected by Atlanta at No. 3 while the Mavericks picked former Oklahoma scoring sensation Trae Young for the Hawks at No. 5 as part of the deal.

ESPN's Tim MacMahon reported Friday that the Dallas Mavericks are not expected to have Luka Doncic participate in the summer league.

The Mavericks made the move for Doncic a year after drafting point guard Dennis Smith Jr. with the ninth overall pick, giving Dallas a chance to have one of the NBA's youngest backcourts depending on where Doncic lands in the rotation.

Doncic's elevation within the Hawks organization reflects a leaguewide belief that Deandre Ayton and Marvin Bagley III could go 1-2 to Phoenix and Sacramento, respectively, to open the draft, league sources said.

Doncic figures to shape the future of the Mavericks in some form with Dallas coming off consecutive losing seasons for the first time since the second of Nowitzki's two hard years at the start of his career.

Besides Nelson, coach Rick Carlisle also weighed in, adding that the comparison game is categorically unnecessary when it comes to describing Doncic and the skill set he's able to bring to the court. I have a feeling some players will be a lot less kind than Iguodala when talking about his mother.

Then, midday on draft day, Dallas and Atlanta engaged in conversations involving the third and fifth pick.
