Instagram hits 1 billion users, launches Instagram TV

Today, the company announced a new app called IGTV that will feature full-screen, hour-long videos created by some of your favourite publishers and celebrities.

IGTV will enable any user to upload long-form videos and will also include "channels" from video "creators", similar to a format employed by Google-owned YouTube.

The standalone IGTV app will be rolling out to iOS and Android globally over the coming weeks. When you open the app it automatically starts playing videos from people you follow.

U.S., South Korea Suspend ‘Ulchi Freedom Guardian’ Joint Military Exercise
Seoul's Defense Ministry said Friday that Defense Minister Song Young-moo held "deep" discussions about the drills with U.S. In her address, she said, "Our government has started a bold journey towards peace process in Korean Peninsula".

IGTV aims for users to watch it just like TV. To start with, Lele Pons, with over 25 million followers already on the main Instagram site, has been signed on. This will allow for more immersion, Instagram hopes, and longer sessions than the traditional app has allowed.

Long-form vertical video! Here we are. So IGTV features can also be accessed on the standard Instagram mobile app.

Instagram has something of a track record of copying Snapchat's ideas - and often making them more popular - but today the company is introducing a new feature that brings it closer to YouTube instead. But, in IGTV, the creators are the channels. Top followed accounts will be able to show video for up to an hour. There is one big twist though - the videos are vertical only.

Police in Florida searching for suspects in murder of Jamaican-American rapper
XXXTentacion has faced several legal issues and was now awaiting trial on charges that he beat his pregnant girlfriend. Video posted to Twitter showed what appeared to be the lifeless body of the rapper in the driver's seat of a BMW i8.

Instagram shared some stats on its website promoting the IGTV that mobile video content will make up for 80 percent of the total mobile data traffic in the next three years. This has been in the works for quite some time, and it arrives five years after Instagram officially welcomed video onto the platform. Anyone can be a creator, and users can upload videos on the IGTV app or the web. Instagram has always been a place to connect with the people who inspire, educate and entertain you every day. This means that you will not have to search for a video to get started.

The number highlights the surging growth of the Facebook-owned social network which allows users to share photos and video. Instagram itself now has more than a billion users.

Taking YouTube by the horns, Instagram has announced, with much fanfare, the launch of IGTV - a video content-only wing of Instagram.
