Moon renews ties with Russian Federation following North Korea-U.S. summit

Moon renews ties with Russian Federation following North Korea-U.S. summit

North Korea's Kim Jong-un and Chinese President Xi Jinping have held a successful meeting in Beijing to discuss regional issues, including denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, the North's state media says.

United States President Donald Trump offered a misleading characterization of his deal with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un on Thursday, insisting the nation had agreed to begin "total denuclearization" right away. "But the most well-known one is this, so there is a great symbolic meaning if this is shut down", said Moon Hong-sik, a research fellow at the Institute for National Security Strategy in South Korea. Pyongyang so far regarded its nuclear program as vital to its survival in the face of what it viewed as US hostility, but Kim has indicated he would be willing to shutter the program if his security was guaranteed.

The missile engine test site that President Donald Trump said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had committed to destroy is a major facility in the western part of the country that has been used for testing engines for long-range missiles, according to a US official.

North Korea announced before the Singapore summit the suspension of its ICBM testing and also closed its nuclear bomb test site, where it conducted several explosions in front of visiting media that it said were to destroy testing tunnels.

"I wouldn't expect that at this point", he added.

Last month, footage appeared to show North Korea blowing up tunnels at a nuclear test site, hours before President Trump canceled the planned summit.

That saw both leaders sign a document to say that North Korea would dump its nukes, in return for economic help from the US.

The South Korean delegation on Friday was led by Park Kyung-seo, head of the Korean Red Cross, and North Korea was led by Pak Yong-il, vice chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland.

Kim's limousine and motorcade left the North Korean embassy for Beijing's airport on Wednesday afternoon, watched by gawking pedestrians.

The good news? A U.S. plan for North Korean denuclearization does, indeed, exist. "The detailed negotiations have not begun", Mattis said, according to the British Telegraph, which cited the Yonhap news agency.

North and South Korea remain in a technical state of war since 1953, when a ceasefire came into force.

Mr Trump surprised officials in South Korea and the US after that meeting by saying he would end "provocative" joint US-South Korean military exercises.

"The Russian prime minister and the South Korean president will discuss the current state of and prospects for further development of trade-an-economic and investment cooperation between Russia and South Korea with a focus on the implementation of large-scale joint projects in the energy sector, in the areas of industry, high technologies, transport and others", the press service of the Russian government said. Does he know something that we don't?

However, as my South Korean friends told me, using such an excuse at the negotiation table in order to get as many concessions as possible has been a familiar strategy used by Pyongyang over the past 20 years.
