US quits UN Human Rights Council

US quits UN Human Rights Council

"While we agree with the USA on the need for reform, our support for this Human Rights Council remains steadfast, and we will continue to advance the cause of reform from within its ranks", Britain's ambassador Julian Braithwaite said.

Human Rights Watch U.N. director Louis Charbonneau said the USA draft General Assembly resolution "could have backfired badly and the process could have been hijacked" by the countries seeking to undermine the Human Rights Council.

But it was not until Tuesday, when the United States announced its withdrawal from membership in the council, that any country - let alone a permanent member of the UN's Security Council - had taken its frustrations with the human rights body to the extreme level of giving up and pulling out.

Ambassador Haley insisted that the USA will continue to promote human rights outside the council, and to lead like-minded countries in efforts to advance values of individual freedoms.

Haley says that was "a contributing factor" in the USA decision to leave the council.

China's top anti-graft watchdog said on Wednesday that the USA withdraw from the council "has put the American peoples' boastful image of being a defender of human rights on the verge of collapse", Reuters reported.

Salah unable to avoid Egypt defeat and likely elimination
As for the hosts, they got the tournament off to an unexpectedly joyous start in the first game when they walloped Saudi Arabia . Fathi's attempted clearance for the first goal was sloppy, as was Ali Gabr's attempt at closing down Dzyuba for the third goal.

After several months of threats, the Trump Administration has finally made a decision to pull out of the United Nations' Human Rights Council.

Diplomats have said the United States withdrawal could bolster countries such as Cuba, Russia, Egypt and Pakistan, which resist what they see as United Nations interference in sovereign issues.

He said it is an "exercise in shameless hypocrisy, with numerous world's worst human rights abuses going ignored, and some of the world's most serious offenders sitting on the council itself". We have a Constitution.

"China will continue, working with all sides, to make its contribution to the healthy development of human rights around the world via constructive dialogue and cooperation", he added.

"But because this body is not going away - and we know that from the United States withdrawal from 2006 to 2009 - what we need is for the USA to appoint someone like Nikki Haley to take the floor and speak truth to power".

"We have a very strong relationship with the OHCHR and will continue to promote human rights and fundamental freedoms through that relationship", the press office of the USA mission in Geneva said in an email. It calls the 47-member body "hypocritical" and "self-serving".

Prince William, Kate Middleton Announce Prince Louis' Christening Service
Prince Louis' christening date has been confirmed by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge , Kensington Palace said today. Charlotte's baptism in 2015 involved the Cambridge family walking to church past well-wishers.

Speaking about the decision Tuesday night, Pompeo called the organization a "poor defender of human rights". "Rather than altering those practices, it is now threatening United States companies, workers and farmers who have done nothing wrong".

The US' announcement comes after the council voted last month to probe the killing of scores of Palestinian protesters in the Gaza Strip and accused Israel of excessive use of force.

She had been threatening the pull-out since past year unless the council made changes advocated by the U.S. Russian Federation blasted the American move, calling it "boorish" and saying the U.S.

In Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticized what she described as Washington's "boorish cynicism in stubbornly refusing to recognize its own human rights problems while trying to tailor the council to its political interests".

Russia's foreign ministry had earlier accused the USA of "gross cynicism" and "disregard" for the United Nations.

Russian Federation says that the USA exit from the United Nations' Human Rights Council reflects Washington's unilateralist approach to global affairs. "The only thing worse than a council that does nearly nothing to protect human rights is a council that covers for human-rights abuses-and is therefore an obstacle to progress and an impediment to change".
