Sen. Merkley: Zero tolerance is 'zero humanity'

Sen. Merkley: Zero tolerance is 'zero humanity'

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins said on CBS's Face the Nation Sunday that separating children from their parents is "traumatizing" to children and "contrary to our values in this country".

"The United States will not be a migrant camp, and it will not be a refugee holding facility", Trump said in remarks delivered at the White House.

The Trump administration has repeatedly denied that its policy is to separate children from their parents when families cross the U.S. border illegally.

Gutierrez said Trump is shying away from the child separation policy because he is "all of the sudden becoming very uncomfortable with this situation - the visuals of children in cages, the visuals of children being separated from their parents is something that he doesn't like".

In the House, top Democrat Nancy Pelosi attacked the separations as a "barbaric" policy that "has to stop". The bill, a compromise between moderates and conservatives, is expected to be voted on next week.

Nielsen continued: "For those seeking asylum at ports of entry, we have continued the policy from previous Administrations and will only separate if the child is in danger, there is no custodial relationship between "family" members, or if the adult has broken a law".

Bringing this full circle, Trump said he wants a merit based immigration system "so that Boeing, and Lockheed, and Grumman - all of the people here today, can hire people based on merit". Laura Bush was writing a guest column for The Washington Post Sunday and compared the policy to the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

"Anthony Scaramucci, a former advisor to President Trump, said Saturday he believed the policy was not humane and called on Trump to "[fix] this problem".

Those two delivered a warning shot right in the open stages when they combined for a chance that could have brought a goal. Well, not everyone is in doubt. "We showed a lot of character, a lot of determination", midfielder Miguel Layun said.

"Mrs Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform", Mrs Trump's communications director Stephanie Grisham said in a statement to CNN. But Trump suggested Friday in an interview on Fox News' "Fox and Friends" he would not reverse his administration's policy unless Democrats agreed to his longstanding immigration priorities. "If you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you and that child will be separated from you as required by law".

The "zero-tolerance" border security policy implemented by President Donald Trump's administration has sparked outrage on both sides of the political aisle and took on particular resonance as America celebrated Father's Day. Like Trump, she called on Congress to reform immigration laws. "Be a dad. I can't think of an act that is more cruel, that is more evil than to rip a child from their parents", Gutierrez said.

Meanwhile, House Republicans have put together two immigration bills - a hard-right proposal and one that is a compromise between conservative and moderate Republicans. The White House has said Trump would sign either one. "And it's an effort to extort a bill to their liking in the Congress".

The issue is causing a growing political storm for the Trump administration.
