Survivors of past Hawaii lava recall despair and opportunity

Areas downwind, including Volcano and Ka'u, will be affected by ash. A 5.3-magnitude natural disaster, centered in the summit region of the volcano, hit the island on Friday.

The Kilauea volcano in Hawaii continues to ooze lava across the inner and southern parts of the big island, and into the Pacific Ocean.

Ige said qualifying residents may receive help from the federal government for issues such as shelter, unemployment, trauma and legal matters. Lava from the volcano has destroyed 467 homes.
