Second deputy dies after Kansas City courthouse shooting

Two sheriff's deputies were fatally shot when an inmate overpowered them near a Kansas courthouse on Friday, officials said.

The Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office announced that Deputy Theresa King, 44, succumbed to her injuries Saturday morning, and Deputy Patrick Rohrer, 35, died Friday shortly after the shooting.

Bailiff said it's very possible the deputies were shot with their own guns. Kelli Bailiff said during a news conference Friday at the University of Kansas Hospital.

Police identified the slain deputy as Patrick Rohrer, 35, a seven-year veteran. Robert King, who lives nearby, questioned why police didn't use nonlethal force.

King had three children, Bailiff said, and Rohrer had two.

Zeigler says the deputies were taking the inmate from the courthouse back to jail, not the other way around, as police initially reported.

A candlelight vigil will be held for both deputies at the city hall on Sunday, June 17 at 8:00p.m.

'Our hearts break for our brothers and sisters at Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office as well as for the loved ones of the deputies shot today, one of whom has died.

Bailiff said investigators do not believe the public is in any danger. Kelli Bailiff says the suspect also was wounded in the shooting late Friday morning.

Evidence markers dot the pavement just outside the Wyandotte County Courthouse in Kansas City, Kan. They didn't give any details Saturday as to his condition.

Kansas City police spokesman Zac Blair said officers were speaking to witnesses about shooting.

Gov Jeff Colyer was briefed on the incident as he arrived to a congressional forum hosted by the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.

"This incident remains under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division, who is encouraging anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474- TIPS (8477)", the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office said.

The year before, Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Wood was shot at a convenience store but survived.
