NCAA changes redshirt rule in college football

A new NCAA ruling that will allow football players to participate in up to four games in a season without losing their redshirt would've been especially handy for Kentucky on numerous occasions during the Mark Stoops era.

Murray has another season of college football eligibility that he could use beyond this year, although he's obviously decided that he'll be one-and-done as the Sooners' starting quarterback.

The new redshirt rule will begin this season. "Coaches will appreciate the additional flexibility and ability to give younger players an opportunity to participate in limited competition".

"I applaud the NCAA for this rule change", Virginia Tech football coach Justin Fuente said Wednesday, in a statement released by the school.

In recent years, a number of high profile cases became public where a coach and school attempted to block an athlete from transferring to a rival program or one in the same conference it competed in.

Former Coastal Carolina football player Nick Clark, who represents the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee on the Division I Council, likes the transparency of the new rule. The NCAA notes, however, that conferences can enact rules that are more restrictive than the national rule.

"The membership showed today that it supports this significant change in transfer rules", Sell said.

Berry was extremely optimistic about the proposal's chances following the AFCA Convention in January, was less positive in March and cautious in April, when the proposal was tabled over questions about timing, the number of games and potential application to other sports.

Redshirting is beneficial for players still because they get "extra lifting, they get some extra time with (strength and conditioning coaches) and those guys", Stoops said, especially offensive and defensive linemen. A player who moves from one ACC school to another must sit out one season and will lose a season of eligibility. More often than not, it limited players from speaking to other schools in the same conference or on future schedules.

The NCAA Division I Council says there will be a new "notification of transfer" model, which creates a system where a student informs his or her school of the desire to transfer, then the school is required to register the student in a national transfer database within two business days and then other coaches are free to contact that athlete. "It's a win for the student-athlete, and our coaches are tremendously excited about this opportunity".

"I really wish we could have redshirted him", Stoops said of McWilson. Previously, an athlete who plays in two or three games and gets hurt can apply for a medical redshirt waiver to gain back that lost year of eligibility.
