Navarro voices regret for harsh words about Canadian leader

US President Donald Trump has imposed a 25 per cent tariff on import of steel from Canada and another 15 per cent on aluminium using the "national security interest" provisions of the existing American laws.

In the two tweets that ended USA support for the joint G-7 statement, Trump accused Trudeau of having made "false statements" during a news conference.

"Why should I, as President of the United States, allow countries to continue to make Massive Trade Surpluses, as they have for decades, while our Farmers, Workers & Taxpayers have such a big and unfair price to pay?" he wrote. The president also repeated claims that Canada overtaxes American dairy products under its supply management system and complained about Canadian automobiles flooding the USA market.

Trump said in another tweet that Trudeau was "meek and mild" during their private meeting, only to hold a news conference calling the US tariffs "insulting". Canada does indeed impose a 270% tariff on dairy that has kept many USA dairy products from making their way from the U.S.to Canada.

Canada's House of Commons stood Monday in defiance of Donald Trump, denouncing his name-calling tirade against Justin Trudeau and endorsing the prime minister's firm response to protectionist USA tariffs and tweeted presidential threats against dairy producers and automakers.

In an extraordinary interview with CNN's State of the Union on Sunday, Larry Kudlow, who was present for negotiations at the G7 summit in Quebec over the weekend, said Trudeau had instigated "a betrayal" and was "essentially double-crossing President Trump".

Trump's conduct was "actually not a real surprise, we have seen this with the climate agreement or the Iran deal", Maas, a senior member of the Social Democrats, a partner in Chancellor Angela Merkel´s governing coalition, told reporters in Berlin. "We used fact-based arguments".

Trump fired off a volley of tweets on Monday further venting anger at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, the European Union and Trudeau.

"I'm very proud of how, not only of our government but also opposition parties and premiers, business communities and civil society have all piled in on the same side in trying to negotiate a very hard situation". These countermeasures amount up to 16.6 billion Canadian dollars (about 12 billion US dollars) in imports of steel, aluminum, and other products from the Unites States, and are set to come into effect on July 1 this year.

The spat drew in Germany and France, who sharply criticised Mr Trump's decision to abruptly withdraw his support for a Group of Seven communique hammered out at a Canadian summit on Saturday (local time), accusing him of destroying trust and acting inconsistently.

In retaliation, all three allies vowed to impose retaliatory tariffs on scores of USA products.
