More evacuations ordered at Colorado wildfire

The total number of homes evacuated during the fires burning in southwest Colorado has reached more than 1,300 residential structures, Graham said, and the fire had burnt more than 8,691 acres, according to the last aerial survey, early Saturday, she said.

Firefighters have kept the Colorado fire to the west of Highway 550 and away from structures, county commissioners in La Plata County, Colorado, said in a Saturday Facebook post.

Aircraft are monitoring the fire's west flank.

The so-called 416 Fire in southwest Colorado had burned almost 17,000 acres (6,880 hectares) by Sunday afternoon, an area larger than Manhattan.

The cause of the blaze, which is being called the 416 Fire, which started June 1 in the San Juan National Forest, has not been determined.

Additional resources are headed to battle the two fires, but on Sunday night, Griffee didn't have details. Winds are expected to increase throughout the week.

Weather conditions will continue to be challenging.

A stubborn Colorado wildfire grew by around a fifth on Saturday and was expected to continue to grow Sunday, consuming sparsely populated land as low humidity and high winds left firefighters bracing for it to spread, officials said.

Neither do the other thousands of people who've been evacuated because of this fire that's sending smoke billowing through the sky and shutting down the San Juan National Forest starting Tuesday. And the Natty fire, which covered 70 acres near Cañon City in south-central Colorado, had been 70 percent contained. It could also ban certain activities in unincorporated parts of the county.

Elsewhere, the National Weather Service issued a dense smoke weather warning for Highway 550 corridor from Molas Pass through Durango and down to the New Mexico state line, as well as the Highway 160 corridor between Hesperus and Bayfield, extending east past Pagosa Springs.

Firefighters will continue to patrol along US 550 to mop up hot spots and keep the flames west of the highway and away from structures. Visibility is expected to be a quarter mile or less.

There were no new burn-area updates early on Monday for the so-called 416 Fire in southwest Colorado but, according to the last update, it had burned almost 17,000 acres (6,880 hectares) by Sunday evening, an area larger than Manhattan. The advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Monday.
