At least 7 dead, injured in Guatemala volcano eruption

"It is important to remain calm because the Fuego volcano erupts throughout the year", said David de Leon, spokesman for the National Disaster Prevention Authority.

An estimated 25 people, including at least three children, were killed and almost 300 injured on Sunday, officials said.

The most well-known example of the consequences of a pyroclastic flow can be found in Italy where the two Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum were covered under a thick blanket of ash in 79 AD.

CONRED said the eruption has caused a column of ash more than 11 km above sea level, and generated strong rumblings with waves that caused vibration in roofs and windows at a distance of 20 km.

National Disaster Management Agency chief Sergio Cabañas told local radio that a lava stream changed course to head toward the village of El Rodeo, the BBC reported.

Around 3,100 people have been evacuated from nearby communities into shelters.

Hilda Lopez said her mother and sister were still missing after the slurry of hot gas, ash and rock roared into her village of San Miguel Los Lotes, just below the mountain's flanks.

Rescue operations resumed Monday morning after being suspended overnight due to the risky conditions.

Guatemala's 3,763-meter (12,346-foot) Fuego volcano, located 35 kilometers southwest of the capital, erupted on Sunday, killing at least 25 people and forcing the evacuation of more than 3,000 people.

Dozens of videos making the rounds on social media and Guatemalan TV showing widespread devastation.

"It's a river of lava that overflowed its banks and affected the El Rodeo village. When the lava was already here they passed by in their pickup trucks yelling at us to leave, but the cars did not stop to pick up the people", said Rafael Letran, a resident of El Rodeo.

"We were at a party, celebrating the birth of a baby, when one of the neighbors shouted at us to come out and see the that lava was coming", Lopez remembered.

"Not everyone escaped, I think they were buried", survivor Consuelo Hernandez told CNN.

Ash fell on the Guatemala City area as well as the departments of Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla, which are in south-central Guatemala around the volcano. The lava flows reached temperatures of about 1,300 degrees, according to Eddy Sanchez, director of the country's seismology and volcanology institute.

Sea-Watch said it requested help from the coastguard in Malta to send boats to aid the rescue mission but Malta refused. Those incidents delayed the migrants' arrival, but they ultimately made it to Italy.

More than 3,000 people have been evacuated, and Guatemala's president called for a state of emergency to be declared on Sunday night.

The runway was closed due to the presence of volcanic ash and in order to guarantee passenger and aircraft safety, Guatemala's civil aviation authority said in a Tweet.

The Fuego volcano, about 40km south-west of the capital Guatemala City, spewed rocks and ash into the sky on Sunday.

Israel said Monday it would send emergency aid money to Guatemala after a deadly volcanic eruption left at least 25 people dead and cities covered in ash. The lava river was running on the other side of the volcano.

The Volcan de Fuego exploded shortly before noon Sunday. Temperatures of the lava flows reached as high as 700 degrees Celsius, making identification extremely hard.

Officials have advised people to wear masks as protection against falling ash in four of Guatemala's regions.
