Yahoo! Kills! The! Messenger!

Yahoo! Kills! The! Messenger!

With the rise of text messaging and mobile communication apps, early web based and desktop chat programs were pushed aside for the ease of using a mobile phone to communicate. The company announced today that it will be pulling the plug on its popular chat service on July 17, after which users won't be able to access or sign in on Yahoo Messenger.

"'As the communications landscape continues to change over, we're focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs".

The reason cited for this decision by Oath is that they have built Squirrel with a much better technology and more dynamic features that the customers may like, while acknowledging that it is not a very happy decision they have made to shut down Yahoo messenger. Users will have six months after the shutdown to download their Messenger chat history for old times' sake. And with the rise of smartphones, Apple's iMessage, Message+ on Android and other apps, such as Snapchat and China's WeChat, have effectively pushed Yahoo Messenger out of the way.
