Illinois Outbreak Of Salmonella Linked To Walmart

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting 60 cases of Salmonella in five states including IL.

The products were packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers and distributed in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.

Thirty-one people have been hospitalized in this outbreak, the CDC said, and no deaths have been reported.

So far only pre-cut melons have been linked, but it's important to remember food safety measures if you buy whole melons.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is warning everyone about a Salmonella outbreak here in the state. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.

Retailers should not sell or serve recalled pre-cut melon products distributed by Caito Foods Distribution, Gordon Food Service, and SpartanNash Distribution. Cases have been reported in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and OH in patients ranging from 23 to 87 years old.

According to the CDC, Salmonella infections most often cause mild to severe gastroenteritis and severe invasive infections, both which are potentially life-threatening.
