Kate Spade's husband says she suffered from depression

The husband of Kate Spade, the American designer who died on Tuesday, has released a statement that addressed his late wife's battle with depression. In 1993, she and Andy founded Kate Spade New York with business partner Elyce Arons, debuting a line of sleek handbags that became a smash hit. He also mentions that as of the night before her death, she "sounded happy" and that there seemed to be no sign she was contemplating ending her life. "She was exceedingly kind, beautifully sensitive, insanely talented, amusing as heck and one of the most generous people I have ever known".

The businessman also condemned media speculation about Spade's "business problems" and "substance abuse" in the leadup to her death, and says he is "appalled" by reports of a note found in her apartment.

Spade's body was found in her Manhattan apartment by her housekeeper, according to The New York Times.
