It shows the growing severity of the issue

Twenty-five states saw percentage rate increases of more than 30 percent over the 17 years. IN was even higher, experiencing an increase of suicides from 31 to 37 percent.

Just days after the tragic death of fashion icon Kate Spade, which the medical examiner confirmed Thursday was a suicide, new government research sheds light on a disturbing increase in suicides in the United States. "But these issues were [found] in all, with or without a mental health condition". In more than half of all deaths in 27 states, the people had no known mental health condition when they ended their lives.

"Suicide is a leading cause of death for Americans - and it's a tragedy for families and communities across the country", said the CDC principal deputy director, Dr. Anne Schuchat, in a written statement.

'If we step back from the statistics, mental health does not discriminate, ' said Dr Shainna Ali, a Florida psychologist. They said coroners' reports from across the country indicate that suicides often follow relationship or financial problems, substance abuse and health crises.

Preventing suicide requires help from all sectors of society, the researchers said.

With tens of thousands of people ending their own lives each year, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S. overall, and second most common way that those between 10 and 34 die. The other two top 10 causes of death that are on the rise are Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses, she noted.

Almost 45,000 Americans age 10 or older died by suicide in 2016, according to the CDC.

John Madigan, vice president of public policy for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said the rising suicide rate is a complex phenomenon and that it is hard to pinpoint a reason despite all of the resources available. In 2010, there were 606. Men age 35 to 65 are less likely to seek help when in distress. "Essentially every age group other than those over 75". In the East, Vermont, New Hampshire and SC saw dramatic spikes as well.

The new report also found that, among US states and the District of Columbia, suicide rates varied fourfold in 2014-2016, from about 7 per 100,000 residents per year in Washington, D.C., to 29 per 100,000 residents per year in Montana. With considerations to gender, significant suicide rate increases were observed among males and females in 34 and 43 states, respectively. She also mentioned trigger locks as a possible prevention tool. It's up everywhere. And we know that the rates are actually higher than what's reported.

Experts note that mental illness may have been underreported in the study, either because the person who killed themself had not yet been diagnosed or because those left behind were not aware their loved one's condition.

The report also cites the need to reduce "access to lethal means" but without explicitly discussing firearms or controversial issues such as gun control legislation.

Nationwide, the suicide rate rose to 15.4 per 100,000 in 2014-2016, up from 12.3 in 1999-2001.
