At least 25 dead as volcano erupts in Guatemala

The civil aviation authority of Guatemala announced a temporary closure of operations at Guatemala City's global airport due to the presence of volcanic ash.

Guatemala's Volcan de Fuego - Volcano of Fire - erupted spectacularly Sunday, shooting a plume of ash and gas almost six miles into the sky and spreading ash and debris across towns and farms more than 10 miles away from the volcano. Hours later, around 4pm (8am AEST), lava began flowing down the side of the mountain.

Dramatic video showed a fast-moving flow of mud, ash and slurry slamming into and partly destroying a bridge on a highway between the towns of Sacatepequez and Escuintla.

The volcano, called Volcan de Fuego (Volcano of Fire), is located 27 miles southwest of Guatemala City, the country's capital.

According to vulcanologists, eruption records of Fuego Volcano, one of the country's most active volcanoes, date back to 1542.

Volunteer firefighter German Padilla said there was a moment of hope when a survivor reported a cellphone communication from a person inside a home that had been in the lava's path. Seven deaths were confirmed previously.
