Ute Park Fire at 36114 acres, 23 percent contained

Residents evacuated from Cimmaron and surrounding neighborhoods spent a second night away from their homes Saturday (June 2), joined yesterday evening by people from Ute Park who were told to leave their homes as a now 31,930-acre wildfire threatened close by.

Residents in Cimarron Village, about 150 miles east of Santa Fe, were ordered to evacuate as the fire is only three miles outside of town.

The cause of the fire, burning along US 64, remains under investigation, according to the New Mexico State Forestry Division.

People were allowed to return home to the village of Cimarron in phases on Monday afternoon, but the evacuation order was still in place for Ute Park, and the blaze was threatening 219 homes there.

Now that Colorado also has a fire near Durango the slurry bombers will have to be shared over there but they will keep several helicopters here to do water drops on hot spots according to New Mexico State Forester Donald Griego.

The so-called Ute Park Fire destroyed 14 unoccupied structures at the Boy Scouts' Philmont Ranch overnight as it burned near Highway 64 in Ute Park.

"It's no guarantee that a storm will hit that fire, but there is certainly a good chance that one will go over the area", he said.
