Russian space capsule lands in Kazakhstan

As the Space Station passes into a period of night every 45 mins video is unavailable - during this time, and other breaks in transmission recorded footage is shown when back in daylight earth will recommence.

After landing, Shkaplerov ate from a bowl of grapes and said he was feeling well and happy to be back on Earth.

Another three astronauts are to be launched to the station on Wednesday.

A Soyuz capsule carrying Russian Anton Shkaplerov, American Scott Tingle and Japan's Norishige Kanai floated down under a red-and-white parachute for a landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan.

Tingle and Kanai were to travel to the Kazakh city of Karaganda before leaving for Houston, Texas.

The ball, called Telstar 18, was taken to the ISS in March by the Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov.

Russian news agency TASS reported that the ball is planned to be used during the opening game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow on Jun 14, although FIFA has not confirmed that information.

This mission was the first for Tingle and Kanai, and Shkaplerov now has logged 532 days in space on three flights.

JAXA president Hiroshi Yamakawa said: "I am very pleased that Astronaut Kanai, who completed a long stay at the International Space Station (ISS), returned safely to the Republic of Kazakhstan by the Soyuz spacecraft (53S/MS-07) today".

NASA astronaut Serena Aunon-Chancellor, Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Prokopyev and German astronaut Alexander Gerst are preparing to go to the ISS this week. He has helped to raised awareness of the ISS in Japan by tweeting in the Japanese language during his time in space.

The space laboratory has been orbiting Earth at about 28,000 kilometres per hour since 1998.
