The Falcon 9 rocket soared off Launch Complex 40 at 12:45 a.m.; the launch was delayed 16 minutes because of gusty winds.

SpaceX's next launch is a cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station, set for the end of the month.

39-yr-old Kerala woman under observation for Nipah symptoms dies

Musk also wants to reuse the two-stage Falon 9's upper stage and its payload fairing - the nose cone that protects satellites during launch.

And the BFR - the giant rocket-spaceship duo SpaceX is developing to get people to Mars, launch satellites, clean up space junk and carry passengers on superfast trips around Earth - is created to be fully reusable.

SpaceX later tweeted "Successful deployment of SES-12 to a geostationary transfer orbit confirmed". It is created to support SES's direct-to-home broadcasting and data connectivity services in the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region, including rapidly growing markets such as India and Indonesia, according to SES.
