Apple is also improving the Photos app in iOS 12. It may be too soon for any big changes, but Apple could preview the Siri improvements it hopes to make.

Siri is getting a boost in iOS 12, with a new feature called "Shortcuts". The Alphabet Inc. company has a new Dashboard for Android phones that lets people monitor how long they're using other apps and reminds them to take a break. For instance, if you use a Tile to keep an eye on your keys saying "Where's my Tile" will instantly bring up your keys location.

Another example is if Siri detects you are running late for a meeting, it will suggest that you message the person who is hosting the meeting. Along with letting you build your own shortcuts, this will be packed full of pre-made shortcuts that you can enable.

The default Photos app in iOS finally has a built-in intelligent search feature - you can now search for multiple terms, locations, and more. It has a complete redesign to look more like the App Store and looks a whole lot better.

Stocks: a new Stocks app re-design, with News integration, and available on the iPad.

News has a new sidebar on the iPad. Apple also showed off a new AR tool, Measure, that turns your phone into an $800 ruler. A new activity report will track how much time you're spending on your mobile device and how you're spending it via a daily breakdown. Parents will also be able to limit app time from another device and lock access based on age appropriate content. With up to 40% faster app launch, up to 50% faster keyboard display, up to 70% faster camera launch, up to 2x faster app launch under load, up to 2x faster share sheet display under load, Apple promises to improve performance of older devices by up to 40% with iOS 12.

This new feature is great for kids, too.

FaceTime users will now be able to make group video calls with up to 32 other people.

BREAKING: This is a live piece and we'll update it throughout the conference.

iOS 12 will come out later this year, it'll be supported on every single device that runs iOS 11 right now.

In a similar vein, parental controls are also expected to receive a boost. Instead of waking up to a string of notifications missed over night, users will get a new "Good morning" screen summarizing the alerts.

Next up from the rumour-mill is that the build will be equipped with a fresh batch of Animoji, which could be baked into FaceTime. "They beg us to use their apps". The division's revenue surged by 31 percent from the previous year in Apple's most recent quarter.

This will enable users to open hotel rooms and vehicle doors using their iPhones.

At one point, rumours were circulating that it would introduce universal applications that work across iPad, iPhone and Mac, but more recently the common consensus is that this won't be ready until 2019 or even later.

This smaller scale update could be because a number of high profile features were pushed back from this release (according to Bloomberg).

Apple has promised iOS 12 will not only be available to older models, but in fact speed them up. The conference, where Apple interacts with its developer community, has been an annual feature since 1989.

Apple's event is traditionally used to give an early look at the next version of all Apple's software platforms before they are released to the public in the autumn. In my experience, you'll need it!
