SubTropical Storm Alberto Path Projection from Alan Sealls

The storm system passed Cuba on Saturday and has been moving slowly but surely toward the Florida panhandle at about 14 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center on Sunday.

Although the center of Alberto is expected to pass to the West of the Suncoast we may experience low end tropical storm force winds beginning on Sunday morning.

Alberto is likely to bring flooding and torrential rains to both states, according to the Miami Herald and Clarion Ledger, and a tropical storm watch has been issued for Florida's panhandle west of Gulf County.

Cuba is expected to get as much as 15 inches of rain, the hurricane center said in an advisory Saturday (May 26) morning, and the Florida Keys and South Florida could get as much as 10 inches.

Local emergency officials continue to monitor flood-prone areas, but so far no issues have been reported. Our weather Memorial Day and Tuesday will depend on the eventual track and strength of the storm.

As Alberto churns up toward the Gulf Coast on Sunday night, "an increasing tropical plume of moisture will stream into the Coastal Carolinas", said Rachel Gross-Zouzias in a special weather briefing.

The center of the storm is forecasted to come over the Alabama-Florida border.

The track for Alberto shows it aiming for the Florida Panhandle on Monday. Subtropical storms typically have cooler temperatures near the center, and the area of strongest winds and storms are well removed from the center of circulation. "Rainfall amounts of 5 to 8 inches, and possibly locally up to double these amounts are possible in this area with this event", the NWS said.

The National Hurricane Center has taken Louisiana out of the cone of where they believe Subtropical Storm Alberto will make landfall.

The storm is forecast to bring between six and 12 inches of rain to the Northwest Florida area, and there is the possibility of 12 to 24 inches of rain in some areas, the National Weather Service in Mobile, Ala., said.
