Monaco win is redemption - Ricciardo

Monaco win is redemption - Ricciardo

Nearly two years ago to the day, Daniel Ricciardo was denied a maiden Monaco Grand Prix victory due to a sluggish pit stop and only on Sunday was he able to finally step atop the principality podium. He was quickest in every session. It was a courageous move by the team but one that did not pay off as Vettel pitted four laps later and came back out in front of his championship rival. So I'm stoked. There was a few doubts that came in mid race.

Rivals have been talking up the chances of Ricciardo and Dutch teammate Max Verstappen, who was second on Thursday's timesheets.

Horner is confident however that the 20-year-old will take away a valuable lesson from his blunder. It later transpired that he had damaged his gearbox, and Red Bull were unable to replace it in time for him to compete in qualifying.

He will now start from the back of the field, on a track where overtaking is extremely hard.

But the problem was exacerbated this year because drivers were driving slowly to ensure the fragile "hyper-soft" and "ultra-soft" tyres, the two softest in Pirelli's range, made the required stint lengths. He in a auto that is capable of winning this grand prix and that will hurt him even more.

Daniel Ricciardo reckons Monaco owes him a win, and the Australian is ready to cash in the debt on Sunday. Horner was clear about Verstappen ruining a good opportunity, and clearly unhappy: "He needs to learn from it and stop making these errors". "He knows that more than anybody". A late virtual safety auto to clear debris from a collision between Charles Leclerc and Brendon Hartley worked in Ricciardo's favour and gave him a five-second buffer over Vettel for the final four laps. Lewis Hamilton will line up third on the grid after setting a time 0.422s off Ricciardo. The first stint was really tough - I'd started on the Ultrasoft and was looking to run longer than the Hypersoft runners, but I had too much degradation and couldn't manage it. "I've given it everything I could".

"Because it's a tight circuit, you're able to take the piss a little bit with going slow", he said.

Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen agreed that the race had not been exciting, having started and finished in the same position - fourth - after one pitstop.

In the battle to be "best of the rest" after the top three teams, veterans Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez were scrapping it out with the new kids on the block.
