Trump Still Open to Possibility of Summit with N. Korea

"Very good news to receive the warm and productive statement from North Korea", Trump tweeted.

Despite the sudden pause in the rush toward a summit, all sides will most likely try to reschedule the meeting.

At the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Friday that "the diplomats are still at work on the summit" but declined to say whether he thought the event would take place on June 12.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, a staunch ally of Kim Jong Un, said the North Korean leader had in fact done "everything that he had promised in advance, even blowing up the tunnels and shafts" of the site. The previous summit was held at the southern side of the border.

After some fiery North Korean rhetoric, Mr Trump announced the summit would not be held. Another photo showed Moon shaking hands with Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong.

The comments appeared to reflect a broadly shared perception coming from the White House and State Department that the two leaders still want to get together and that there will be a meeting eventually.

South Korean officials have said the pair discussed carrying out the peace commitments reached in their first summit last month, as well as Mr Kim's potential meeting with US President Donald Trump.

In a statement, North Korea regretted the cancellation of the summit and said that it was willing to meet anytime in any way.

"Whether it was to maintain good will with the South, or whether it was the case that they realized, "Our great leader wants to move ahead with summit, and perhaps our language put that in jeopardy" is unclear, he said.

Asked if it was playing games ahead of the summit, the president responded, "Everyone plays games", adding: "We'll see what happens, it could even be the 12th".

"We simply couldn't get them to pick up the phone", a White House senior official told reporters on Thursday. "The Korean train for peace is moving and if the US wants to be a part of it, they better get moving".

"We weren't getting the right signals previously, so hopefully we will in the future", Nauert said.

The comments came just a day after Trump cited Pyongyang's "open hostility" in canceling the meeting.

It has said in previous, failed talks that it could consider giving up its arsenal if the United States provided security guarantees by removing its troops from South Korea and withdrawing its so-called nuclear umbrella of deterrence from South Korea and Japan.

He said North Korea remained open to resolving issues with Washington "regardless of ways, at any time". On Thursday, White House officials noted that Trump had left the door open with a letter to Kim that blamed "tremendous anger and open hostility" by Pyongyang but also urged Kim to call him.

On Friday, North Korea's vice foreign minister said his country's "objective and resolve to do our best for the sake of peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and all humankind remain unchanged".

Kim Dong-yub, a North Korea expert at Seoul's Institute for Far Eastern Studies, said the North Korean response was notably "courteous, reserved and diplomatically refined", which he said shows that Pyongyang is eager to talk with Washington and believes that the United States needs more time to prepare for the summit.

Maybe North Korea isn't such a unsafe place after all, they say.

Even if it does move forward, there's now a question of what can be accomplished after North Korea made clear it will not accept the US demands for complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.

That official had hinted at a "nuclear-to-nuclear showdown" and insulted U.S. Vice- President Mike Pence.

Trump also struck a conciliatory tone at times, thanking Kim for his "time, patience and effort" on the negotiations, and for releasing the three American hostages.
