Pompeo Seeks 'Credible' North Korean Steps Toward Denuclearization

North Korea gathered up some 30 foreign journalists on Wednesday morning for a trip to a mountain where it carried out a massive nuclear test in September - but this time, North Korea will be closing the site down.

Mr Trump accepted North Korea's invitation for direct talks after more than a year of heated rhetoric and with global concern that hostilities might escalate into military confrontation.

Speaking on the day he welcomed Mr Jae-in for a White House visit, Mr Trump told reporters: "We'll see what happens".

Trump did not say, however, whether the preparatory talks between United States and North Korean officials in coming days were expected to clarify the situation.

The U.S. wants a "rapid" process in which North Korea's abandonment of its nuclear program is "total and complete, that won't be extended over time", Pompeo said of the agenda for the planned summit.

"Bolton meant how Gaddafi allowed the U.S. to pack up and take away his nuclear-weapons-related equipment".

Pompeo said he made clear to Kim the USA view of what steps Pyongyang needs to take, including verification work, in order to demonstrate "real denuclearization".

For Kim Jong Un, North Korea's unpredictable young leader, a summit with Donald Trump has much to offer.

Pompeo's reformulation of the US demands was presaged by Trump on Tuesday, when a reporter asked if Kim could be expected to give up his nuclear capabilities all at once.

Meeks accused Pompeo of neglecting the issue now that he is secretary of state, and of treating Clinton, who lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election, "with venom" as he accused her of not caring about diplomats' safety.

Talks between the Koreas will likely resume after Friday, once Max Thunder finishes, said Moon's media secretary, Yoon Young-chan.

The spat between the USA and North Korea over what denuclearisation means raised questions about how clear Pompeo had been in his two meetings with Kim at Easter and earlier this month.

North Korea cancelled high-level talks with South Korea, saying the South's joint military exercises with the U.S. - which it had previously said it would tolerate - were a "provocation". Trump didn't discuss all the conditions they have prepared for the North but was adamant that "denuclearisation must take place".

It would be historic as no sitting United States president has ever met a North Korean leader. "This would be with Kim Jong Un, something where he'd be there; he'd be running his country".

A failed summit would damage Trump's self-promoted image as a master deal-maker.

In addition to Dallas' quick response to the shooting, Howell praised students and faculty for their actions during the attack. The Dixon city manager Danny Langloss says police confronted a former male student with a gun on school property about 8 a.m.

South Korea's Unification Ministry says the journalists were finally accepted by the North Wednesday through a message sent by a cross-border communication channel at the truce village of Panmunjom.
