Ex-Boyfriend Of Woman Killed In Aliso Viejo Explosion Arrested

She said she saw two burned women staggering out of the building, covered in ash and soot.

A man described as an estranged ex-boyfriend and former business associate of the woman killed in a Southern California office building explosion has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an unregistered destructive device, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said Thursday.

A woman was killed and three other people were injured in the explosion.

Almost choking up at times, he said he had visited his sister for two weeks last month in order to help her with her business. One victim said she noticed lots of mail piled up on the floor, along with three to four brown cardboard boxes, the affidavit said. Krajnyak was blown out of the building in the fiery explosion that shook the surrounding area.

"There are some components we have located at the scene that are inconsistent with what one might expect to find at this business", Delacourt said.

He has not been charged in connection with the explosion. Delacourt declined to comment on possible leads investigators might be pursuing.

Beal was not asked to enter a plea on Thursday, nor will he be asked to enter a plea on Monday, Mrozek said.

A neighbor said Beal was an ex-boyfriend of Krajnyak, and makes rockets in his garage, CBS News correspondent Jamie Yuccas reports. The FBI stressed that Beal has not been charged with involvement in the blast.

Search warrants were served at the business and two other locations, including the Long Beach house.

Inside, investigators say they found items including a seven-foot tall rocket, rocket-making equipment, and at least three containers of black powder, according to court papers.

Pieces of the explosive device recovered were sent to the FBI's laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, to be analyzed, Delacourt said.

Beal, a model rocket hobbyist, told investigators he had not made any bombs and did not have material for an explosion as powerful as the one he saw in news coverage.

Beal also told investigators he had ordered the precursors and accelerants from the internet between the late 1990s and 2004. He said he had once made fireworks and mortars, but quit that after September 11 because he said he "did not want to give the wrong impression".

Authorities said Krajnyak's former boyfriend called police about two hours after the explosion when his current girlfriend told him about the explosion.

Orange County Undersheriff Don Barnes says the formal identification of the body is continuing Wednesday but authorities believe it is that of Ildiko Krajnyak (IL-di-koh KRY-nyak), a licensed cosmetologist.

A voicemail recording at her business said the spa was closed through Monday and would reopen Tuesday, the day of the blast.

Stephen Beal appeared Thursday in federal court in Santa Ana. Beal said he would have to lend Krajnyak money to cover all the expenses some months; other months she made enough to cover the costs, the affidavit said. State records show Beal and Krajnyak were officers in a skin care business called I&S Enterprises. Krajnyak, of Trabuco Canyon, is listed as the CEO, and the address for the business is the same as that of the day spa rocked by the explosion. The blast blew siding off the walls, exposing insulation and framing and shattering windows at the two-story building that houses medical offices.

Two injured people are expected to survive after surgery and a third was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and released. Dave Sawyer said earlier.

Attorney Andrew Bisom, who represented Krajnyak and Ronilo Vestil during the Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceedings, said they were far along on their mandated payment plan but hadn't completed it.

"Then everyone started running out of buildings everywhere with looks on their faces of just horror", the woman said. "A lot of this is still very raw, and still really hard to process for everybody".
