Tesla To Produce More Than 500 Model 3's Per Day This Week

It was unknown at the time of the accident whether the driver was operating on the Autopilot feature.

The crash comes as federal safety agencies investigate the performance of Tesla's semi-autonomous driving system.

Responding to media coverage of the accident, Musk tweeted: "it's super messed up that a Tesla crash resulting in a broken ankle is front page news and the ~40,000 people who died in United States auto accidents alone in past year get nearly no coverage".

"As part of the reorg, we are flattening the management structure to improve communication, combining functions where sensible and trimming activities that are not vital to the success of our mission", Musk said in the memo, which was obtained by Jalopnik and confirmed by Tesla to Business Insider.

Tesla is at a critical juncture as it tries to fix an inauspicious launch of the Model 3 sedan, a mid-market vehicle crucial to its success and future profitability that has been plagued by early production problems. The company said Model 3 production hit 2,270 per week in the last week of April.

Musk originally said that Tesla was restructuring in the company's first-quarter earnings call earlier this month.

However, representatives of the company repeatedly warned the owners of electric Tesla, that when using the autopilot, they should still be careful and watch the road. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the firm's engineers wanted to include additional safeguards on the system, but these were rejected by executives, including CEO Elon Musk, over concerns that they were too expensive, ineffective, and would annoy drivers.

"This is false", Musk wrote.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was not investigating the Utah crash.

"It certainly needs to be better and we work to improve it every day, but ideal is the enemy of good", Musk tweeted.

Everyone at Tesla is not only encouraged, but expected, to provide criticism and feedback to ensure that we're creating the best, safest cars on the road. Musk has said the planned stoppages are meant to give the company time to perform upgrades that will help it reach a goal of building 6,000 vehicles per week by the end of June.

Tesla has been struggling to find solutions to manufacturing bottlenecks on the new assembly line that produces the Model 3, a sedan intended for volume production.

Salt Lake City authorities say the driver was traveling at about 60 miles-per-hour when it slammed into the truck stopped at a red light.

Police said on Monday that the driver, who suffered a broken ankle, said she had been using Autopilot before the crash.
