Black American bishop to preside at royal wedding

Curry, the first African-American to serve as presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, started his ministry in 1978 as deacon-in-charge at St. Stephen's in Winston-Salem.

"I am thrilled that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have requested Bishop Michael Curry to evangelise at their wedding ceremony", Welby wrote on Twitter. "And so we celebrate and pray for them today", Bishop Curry said in a statement.

Sadly, it seems that Curry's, and the Episcopal Church's, support of same-sex marriage has created strains with the Anglican Communion. "They basically understand we made our decision, and this is who we are, and we're committed to being a house of prayer for all". Perhaps he got this perspective from his father, the late Rev. Kenneth Curry, who was an civil rights activists that fought to end segregated schools in Buffalo, New York.
