Sports betting could happen in MS by July

The Supreme Court of the United States has struck down a law prohibiting gambling on sports events with a 6-3 ruling that brings an end to a six-year legal battle over the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. That could create an entirely new advertising category that radio managers might want to keep their eyes on.

IL lawmakers are likely to take a more serious look at regulating sports betting after the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way Monday for states to legalize the practice, breaking a longtime ban and creating a potential financial boon for states and the gambling industry. But before you start placing your sports bets legally, a constitutional law professor at Santa Clara University says there are still other hurdles.

The Conference is reviewing the Supreme Court's ruling on PASPA that was handed down today, which will permit states to legalize sports gambling.

Within hours of the high court's decision, New Jersey lawmakers said they had introduced measures to begin building the framework for regulating legal sports betting.

New Jersey first tried to legalize sports betting in 2012 during then Governor Chris Christie's first term.

"We're competing against 49 other states that have a good business climate, have done a lot to repair their image and fix their fiscal problem, we need to do that in Springfield", LaHood stated.

He said that while the financial gain would be huge for the leagues and the states that would benefit from it, the integrity of professional sports is at stake.

Steve Greenberg, a spokesman for del Lago Resort & Casino, said the Seneca County facility is "eager to offer sports betting as a gaming option".

That is because Monday's ruling does not actually impact the Treasure State.

"It was an uphill battle, but it's really flipped the culture of sports betting and kind of the perspective of sports betting on its ear".

The process to legalize sports gambling in California won't happen overnight.

"The Pennsylvania legislature saw Sports Wagering as a key element of overall gaming expansion, and took the initiative prior to this decision to authorize Sports Wagering which does provide some guidelines on implementation", he said. "So we will see all these people either working together to get it legalized or to team up to get exclusive rights", he says.

But the law that previously outlawed sports and esports betting in the US across the board is done.

Several states are expected to jump at the opportunity immediately, but you probably won't see sports books in Montana anytime soon. William Hill operates the largest number of sports books in Nevada.

"As we look forward to the upcoming football season and Yankees post-season, we are prepared to implement sports betting as quickly as possible", Greenberg said.
