The campaign cast the protests as a "reignition" of the Poor People's Campaign, the 1968 movement started by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others to challenge racism, poverty and militarism. This afternoon's inaugural event, near the steps of the Statehouse, will focus on child poverty, women in poverty and people with disabilities.

At the conclusion of the hourlong protest, some 50 people linked hands in the middle of Jones Street singing "We shall not be moved".

The Poor Individuals's Marketing campaign: A Nationwide Name for Ethical Revival mentioned in a press release Monday that the Rev. William Barber and the Rev. Liz Theoharis, its two co-chairmen, had been arrested outdoors the U.S. Capitol.

The Poor People's Campaign has promised the largest non-violent direct action movement in USA history with protests and teach-ins over the next 40 days, which they hope will spark a nationwide conversation and provoke lawmakers, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Officers cited 10 protesters at the Iowa Capitol who gathered in and around the staff offices of Gov. Kim Reynolds when they refused to leave the building at the close of business hours.

This time, Barber has teamed up with the Rev. Liz Theoharis, a Presbyterian minister and co-director of the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights, and Social Justice at Union Theological Seminary in NY, to take the protests national. The momentum of successive weeks will then culminate in a mass rally of solidarity in Washington, D.C. on June 23.

The rally in Lansing was part of a national launch of the Poor People's Campaign.

Terrence Wise, a fast-food worker who has fought for the living wage and led campaigns for years, believes in the mission and that bringing working class people together will achieve change.

The participants listened to several speakers before beginning what they called their first day of action, which included calling for an overhaul of the nation's voting rights laws. 350.org stands with poor people across America, and around the world.
