Mirtle: Kyle Dubas won't be defined by hockey's archaic analytics debate

The Toronto Maple Leafs made their decision to replace Lou Lamoriello and as expected, the club has promoted Kyle Dubas to become the 17th General Manager in the club's 101 year history. It'll be interesting to see if the veteran National Hockey League executive is willing to leave his job as an advisor in Toronto to join a struggling Islanders franchise. May. If we're talking experience, well, Dubas has been in leadership roles with successful franchises in the OHL, AHL and National Hockey League for eight years now - as long or longer than executives like Ferguson and Bowman were before they became GMs.

Dubas grew up around the Greyhounds, his grandfather coaching them and his father interning with them, and he first joined the OHL club as a scout while still attending Brock University. In addition, eight Marlies' players that developed while Dubas was the GM were on the Leafs' final roster before a Game 7 loss to the Boston Bruins in round one ended their season: William Nylander, Josh Leivo, Kasperi Kapanen, Connor Carrick, Connor Brown, Zach Hyman, Travis Dermott, and Andreas Johnsson.

Dubas' new role not only thrusts the top of the Maple Leafs' front office into the next generation of analysis but leaves the future of fellow interim GM Mark Hunter in question.

She said: "On May 24 past year , I was on my way to talk about new Sure Start projects in East London". He told the Press Association: "She did two things which were really important in that early stage".

"It was a hard decision in that we had two such qualified people", Shanahan said. "And now it's really up to (Kyle) and his staff to get together in the coming weeks and see how it all plays out". Obviously, a move to Colorado never came to fruition, but Dubas opened up about what happened with that situation and much more during an appearance on Prime Time Sports. In fact, Dubas said he relied on Lamoriello for support then. I'm excited to get to work with Mike. "So that's the way we're going to continue to move it ahead". But Dubas knows the organization as well as anyone, and his ability to build bridges when it comes to hockey's major modern philosophical debate - analytics vs.an "old-school", eyeball-test approach - appealed to Shanahan, who gave Dubas a five-year contract as GM.
