Sensex zooms 289 points; Nifty crosses 10800

Votes will be cast on Saturday with counting being held on May 15, and results will be declared later that day.

The BSE Sensex moved up 103 points to 35,319.35, while the wider NSE Nifty finished at 10,741.70, up 23.90 points.

Investor sentiment also got a small boost after US President Donald Trump said he had high hopes of "doing something very meaningful" to curtail North Korea's nuclear ambitions at a summit in Singapore next month.

The day began on a positive note, with the Sensex gaining over 100 points, while the Nifty managed to hover around 10,750.

The Nifty50 index closed 90 points, or 0.84 per cent, up at 10,807, with 38 stocks in the green and 12 in the red.

Meanwhile, on a net basis, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 664.92 crore, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 704.03 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.

Oil stocks including HPCL, BPCL and Reliance Industries saw decent traction today amid firm global crude prices.

Bharti Airtel (-5.7%), Sun Pharma (-2.7%), Titan (-1.2%), Infratel (-1.1%) and Hero MotoCorp (-0.99%) were the top losers in today's trade.

Gains were led by IT, consumer durables and metal stocks.

For the week, both Sensex and Nifty rose by 1.78 per cent.

In the broader market, the BSE Midcap gains 0.4 per cent, while the BSE Smallcap underperformed to lose 0.1 per cent.

Asian markets were mixed as investors digested the news of the U.S. pulling out of the Iran deal.

Japan's Nikkei quoted 0.17 percent higher while Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.83 percent in early deals.

In the Eurozone, Frankfurt's DAX rose 0.27% and Paris CAC was up 0.07% in early trade.
