The World's Best Selling Android Smartphone is a Xiaomi Device

The demand for smartphones has declined.

According to the recent report by a research firm, Apple sold 16 million units of iPhone X in Q1 2018 - nearly double the estimated sales of iPhone X by another research firm released before Apple's quarterly results were announced.

Xiaomi became the world's fourth largest smartphone maker after Samsung, Apple and Huawei in the first quarter, grabbing a record 8 percent market share, according to Strategy Analytics.

Apple managed to grow iPhone shipments by 3 percent year on year by maintaining its shipment strengths in its key markets - the United States and China. The two devices have more or less kept with the high price ranges of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, iPhone X and Galaxy Note 8 before them. This has toppled Apple to 5th place in market share, in terms of the number of units sold, as Xiaomi now takes the 4th position. Xiaomi now owns 8.4 percent of the market as compared to 4.3 percent previous year. "The top-six most popular models together accounted for 1 in 7 of all smartphones shipped worldwide during the quarter".

Xiaomi's smartphone sales hit a road bump in 2015-16 after domestic rivals like Huawei and Oppo copied its low-priced strategy, while doubling down on offline advertisements.

This is Xiaomi has recorded the highest growth of 8.4% this year, nearly twice last year's level (4.3 per cent). "While China has been a growth engine and profit driver for Xiaomi's rising service revenue, overseas market expansion has helped it boost market share, both of which will be critical to the success of its IPO". Apple stays at second with a slight increase from 50.8 million to 52.2 million shipments, which translates to a higher market share of 15.1%. Though that seems astounding, the big leap is in part due to the lackluster performance by Xiaomi in 2017.

Sunnebo continued, "Despite being a household name in China and India, Xiaomi has turned its attention to Europe late, though it has quickly proven to be a worthy opponent". While this might not look very encouraging for Samsung, keep in mind that the phone didn't launch until the very end of the quarter.

According to findings by Strategy Analytics, iPhone X is the world's best-selling smartphone in Q1 2018.

Other than the top four manufacturers in China - Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo - shipments from Chinese manufacturers continue to decline.

The firm estimated that cumulative sales of the iPhone X between launch and the end of March reached nearly 50M units. This is one of the reasons why people are not buying new phones and flagship Q1 2017 China saw a total shipment number of 114 million, in Q1 2018 the number has now dropped to 91 million.
