Exchange of fire in Tral forests, search operation going on

Jammu and Kashmir police on Tuesday claimed to have killed another militant in south Kashmir's Tral of Pulwama district, taking the total death toll of militants four.

He said a gunbattle broke out between militants and security forces when the ultras opened fire.

However, Defence Ministry spokesman was not available for give details about the operation. A soldier and a policeman also lost their lives in the gunfight.

Jammu and Kashmir witnessed 166 per cent more civilian fatalities due to militancy while there was a 42 per cent rise in the number of terrorists neutralised in 2017 compared to the previous year, the Home Ministry said last week.

In the evening, as the news of local militants having been killed reached people, hundreds marched towards Handoora and Khangund villages, the native villages of the two militants believed to be killed. During the encounter, three militants of JeM were killed.

Ishfaq was an active militant since one-and-a-half year ago.

Sources told Kashmir Reader that one of the slain Pakistani militants was named Umar Khalid.
