USA mulls over fresh sanctions against Russian Federation for supporting Assad

President Donald Trump has halted the implementation of new Russian sanctions, just one day after United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley said that new sanctions were coming.

Asked whether there will be further strikes, Ms. Haley said that's "totally up to" Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

She did not say why sanctions would be imposed but the US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said on Sunday that the United States is preparing new sanctions on Russian Federation over its support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Trump team chose to publicly characterize Haley's announcement as a misstatement.

Dutch Foreign Affairs Minister Stef Blok on Monday has called for a ceasefire in the Syrian civil war and dismissed calls for further sanctions against Russian Federation.

United States' Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Sunday the Trump administration will announce more sanctions against Russian Federation as soon as Monday.

However, they made no comment on supporting new sanctions against Russian Federation, instead reaffirming that the use of chemical weapons constituted a breach of worldwide law and warning that, "there can be no impunity and those responsible for such acts must be held accountable".

Assad has denied he used chemical weapons. "Politically, "mission accomplished" means something broader, and I think that the president was referring in military terms".

Haley also said the US won't be pulling troops out of Syria right away, saying their involvement there "is not done".

"But be very clear, if we leave, when we leave, it will be because we know that everything is moving forward".
