Accusing chairman Wafula Chebukati of poor leadership, commissioner Connie Maina who also serves as Vice Chairperson, Amb Dr Paul Kurgat and Margaret Mwachanya said their decision to quit became inevitable after Chebukati suspended CEO Ezra Chiloba without following due process.

The commissioners previous year refused to step down amid opposition calls on them to resign, followed by protests to force their resignation, leading to scores of deaths.

The electoral agency's top officials were divided over how best to conduct the 2017 elections and administrative issues regarding the procurement of voting materials.

While the trouble in the commission has been simmering since the nullification of the August 8 elections, it is the suspension of the chief executive Ezra Chiloba 10 days ago that broke the camel's back.

Statement by James Orengo emerged hours after three IEBC commissioners tendered their resignation faulting Chebukati of a compromised leadership.

"It is basically a confirmation of problems that have been bedeviling IEBC and particularly the management of IEBC by the chair, Mr. Chebukati", said Murkomen.

"The commission has since commenced an in-depth audit, which had necessitated sending the Commission Secretary/CEO on compulsory leave", he said. By law, the commission must have four active members to carry out business.

Three Kenyan commissioners on Monday announced their resignation, deepening a crisis at the country's electoral commission after a botched presidential election previous year.

Kenyatta won reelection after the main opponent dropped out of the race, saying electoral officials failed to make necessary reforms.

After the resignation of the IEBC officials, the commission's head Chebukati has called for a crisis meeting with the remaining officials.
