Karnataka polls: Bharatiya Janata Party issues second list of 82 candidates

Fielding Janata Dal (S) rebels and weeding out controversial legislators and a section of the old guard seemed to be stumbling blocks for the Congress as it tried to finalise candidates for the May 12 Karnataka Assembly elections.

The father-son duos of M Krishanappa and Priya Krishna, and Shamanur Shivashankarappa and SS Mallikarjun have been fielded once again.

Law minister T B Jayachandra's son Santosh Jayachandra was given a ticket from the Chikanayakanhalli Assembly seat (Tumkur).

Karnataka, in the upcoming elections, is witnessing a three-corner fight with the Congress, BJP and the H D Deve Gowda-led JD (S) in the fray.

Patra, however, accused Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah of "hobnobbing" with activists of the Popular Front of India. Asserting that the people will teach the Congress a lesson in the Karnataka Assembly poll, Mr.

"The fierce competition between candidates in certain segments has delayed the finalisation of the candidatures", said a party worker.

"In the case of Yathindra, it had already been announced that he would contest from Varuna". The outraged party leaders are threatening to resign from the primary membership of the party, while others have chose to contest as independent candidates.

The chief minister is also said to have had his way in getting tickets to Anand Singh and B Nagendra in Ballari district. "Our CM, along with others, came from JDS and so he gives more importance to them", he said on being asked if people who had come from the JDS were given preference over those from the Congress. Ironically, the fresh rebellion in the party is a manifestation of rivalry between senior party leaders, including Mallikarjuna M Kharge and D K Shivakumar who missed no opportunity to settle scores with one another, party sources said.

This apart, the party has given tickets to widows of two MLAs - Fathima, wife of late Qamarul Islam (Kalaburagi North) and Keerthana, wife of late Y.N. Rudresh Gowda (Belur). "This is not Indira Gandhi's Congress".
