Colorado teachers to walk out, rally lawmakers for more education funding

The 2018 YMCA Youth and Government Program had 207 high school students from around the state sign up. They will wear red, as have other teachers protesting low pay in other parts of the country.

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin apologized on Sunday to "those who were hurt" by comments he made about children being at risk for sexual abuse and drug use while teachers walked out of classrooms on Friday and protested at the state capitol in Frankfort.

Oklahoma teachers were heading back to classrooms after staging a nine-day walkout, in which they filled the state capitol building in Oklahoma City to demand the restoration of funding for education they say has been drastically reduced over the past decade.

Some lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have been fighting for extra K-12 education funding meant for teacher pay to be put into the state budget or other bills, but there has been fighting between lawmakers in different parties and the Joint Budget Committee over how to spend the extra money now in state coffers.

Nearly thirty Oklahoma schools have announced cancellation for Wednesday's classes and admitted that if they do not see a legislative change, the protests could continue through the week. "We spend more and more of our own money to do things", McNamee said.

"We can't do that anymore", she said.

The Englewood school district, near Denver, said it canceled Monday classes because more than 150 of its educators - 70% of its teacher workforce - had indicated they wouldn't be at work, and there aren't enough substitutes. They are also hoping to secure a stable retirement program.

Colorado teachers make an average of $46,000 a year, ranking 46th in teacher pay, according to the National Education Association. "They don't speak for me, and I think that (coming today) was to us a way of saying this is not over".

"People fear the unknown", said Nusrat, an economics major.

"West Virginia woke us up", Joe Thomas, president of the Arizona Education Association, told cheering teachers at a rally in Phoenix last month.

"Educators have been energized by what's happened in West Virginia, Oklahoma and Kentucky and Arizona", she said, referring to teacher walkouts or demonstrations in those states.
