US Vice President Pence says NAFTA deal possible in several weeks

Pence said they simply had a difference of opinion and some issues were "set aside, for a later date".

He also stressed that the president made clear the U.S.is "prepared to sustain this effort".

USA officials have emphasized that the allied attack on Syria was not meant to provoke or punish Damascus, but rather sought to target the country's chemical arsenal specifically.

The billionaire Pinera served as Chile's president from 2010 to 2014 and returned to office in recent weeks.

Vice President Pence said on Saturday that the Trump administration stood ready to respond to any potential retaliatory measures by Syria or allies, after the U.S., France and the United Kingdom launched military strikes on the country.

There "will be a price to pay" if Syria ever uses chemical weapons again, as the USA is ready to take additional action, Pence told reporters travelling with him to Peru to attend the Summit of the Americas. Trump has long assailed the trade deal's impact on USA workers and threatened to pull the US out if he's unhappy with the terms.

He has said if he's not happy with the terms, then he'll pull the US out.

Pence credited the strong leadership of President Trump and USA allies for conducting what he says was a successful strike with no reported civilian casualties.

This comes two months after an attempt to schedule a meeting in Washington between Pena Nieto and the U.S. president was called off due to Trump's harsh rhetoric regarding NAFTA and immigration.

'I think President Pena Nieto understands that he and President Trump have a difference of opinion on that, ' he said.

There are concerns U.S. -Mexico relations could get rockier with Pena Nieto, a centrist, unable to seek a second six-year term due to Mexico's term limits. Both Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto have argued against scrapping the $1.2 trillion deal.

He also mentioned security threats including drugs, gangs, "migrants feeling hardship and oppression in their homelands", and said there were "real challenges for security at our borders", including terrorists crossing into the U.S. He learned only Tuesday that he would be attending in Trump's place so the president could manage the USA response to Syria.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was barred from attending the summit over his plans to hold a presidential election that the opposition is boycotting and that many foreign governments consider a sham. Last weekend's suspected chemical attack killed 40 civilians, including women and children. He was sworn in after Peru's congress voted to accept the resignation of President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski after a corruption scandal.

Pence repeatedly praised the "strong leadership" of President Donald Trump and American allies in responding to the chemical attacks in Syria.

On Friday, auto industry executives said U.S. trade negotiators significantly softened their demands to increase regional automotive content under a reworked NAFTA trade pact in an effort to seal a deal in the next few weeks.

Pence stated leaders at the summit, which is concentrated around the meltdown of democracy in Venezuela, " saoid that they support the missile strikes in Syria.
