New Zealand sweep Commonwealth sevens gold

The women got their campaign under way on Friday with wins over Kenya (45-0) and South Africa (41-0) before confirming their place at the top of their pool with a 24-7 win over Canada yesterday.

The New Zealand women's side upset Australia 17-12 in their Commonwealth Games final.

Looking to make the podium at the inaugural Commonwealth Games women's rugby sevens competition, England failed to make the most of a strong period of second-half pressure in their semi-final as they were comprehensively beaten 26-5 by the All Blacks, who went on to claim gold.

The BlitzBoks will face Fiji in the semifinals of the Sevens at the Commonwealth Games.

After going up 12-0 in the first half, New Zealand barely saw the ball in the second seven minutes, allowing Australia to level the scores.

New Zealand beat Fiji to gold.

England's greater experience as a series core team was evident with Natasha Hunt and Emily Scarratt both scoring tries after Wales were caught napping after conceding penalties, the latter coasting past two defenders slowly walking back to their own line.
